Call for Student Project Submittals

To ALL students of UCLA Extension's Landscape Architecture Program,

It is time to come forth and submit the projects, that you have been working so hard on in school over the past year, for our esteemed annual student show for 2012.
Each year we ask a group of well-known working Landscape Architects to come out and see our progress as emerging professionals, and to critique the quality of our work.

I highly recommend that you sort through the projects that either you or your instructors, or even your classmates, enjoyed viewing so that the rest of us and this group of professionals can see what you are gifted with.  Below is a link for the submission form that you need to fill out and send in, please pay close attention to the instructions so that we are able to organize and display your projects in a way that would help them SHINE even brighter.

Click on this link -->   http://bit.ly/StudentSubmissions

Also,  we do need volunteers for the events listed on the submission form... if you would like to help out (you won't regret it if you do) please contact us at uclastudentshow@gmail.com  =)

We look forward to seeing the projects you have worked so hard at.

Sincerely,

Shawn Maestretti

Job Opportunities with The County

County of Los Angeles just posted the bulletins for Student Worker and Student Professional Worker again this year.  Attached at the bottom of this email, please find two bulletins for the positions.

·         Student Professional Worker I (OC) C-8243-E  The filing dates will be from Tuesday, 04/10/12 through Wednesday, 04/25/12.
·         Student Worker (OC) C-8242-M    The filing dates will be from Tuesday, 04/10/12 through Wednesday, 04/25/12.

The window period is very short so let the students be aware of the deadline.  The information is pretty much the same as what I sent you last year.  This year, the position we are looking for is not for summer hire but starting the next school year, i.e. Sept. 2012.

The positions are for LA County Public Works Dept. in various Divisions/placements.  When the student applies for the position, they should identify their interest in landscape architecture so we can spot them when we go through the applications.

I am the Unit Head in the Landscape Architectural Unit/Architectural Engineering Division at Public Works Dept. Our landscape group works on various types of projects, e.g. landscaping of watershed/river projects, road right-of-way/streetscape projects, capital project (parks, beaches and harbors, etc.).  There are a total of 6 of us in the Landscape Unit, four licensed landscape architects and two assistant level landscape staff.  It will be preferable the candidate has CAD (AutoCAD) skill.

Please email me back to let me know you received this email.  Also let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

ABOUT THE STUDENT CHAPTER

The UCLA Extension Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (SCASLA) was established to “enable students of landscape architecture to have the opportunity to participate in organized activities outside the academic sphere which would improve skills and knowledge, and complement the curriculum at UCLA Extension.”

All currently enrolled students in the Landscape Architecture program at UCLA Extension are eligible to participate in the activities sponsored and organized by SCASLA, including the annual Student Show and Awards Ceremony, our professional lecture series, workshops, field trips, and other events.

At this time of year, we hold elections for officers and class representatives for the coming academic year.  I strongly encourage all students to consider running for a position and/or nominating your fellow classmate(s) for roles as Class Representatives and Officers.

The time commitment for SCASLA reps and officers is what you make it.  Generally, we have monthly meetings on campus to organize events throughout the year.  In addition to being an impressive addition to your resume, SCASLA reps and officers network regularly with fellow students from our program and others, alumni, professionals in the field, and members of ASLA, in other words, the very people who might one day offer you an internship or job.  Also it’s just a lot of fun.

On behalf of the Officers and Class Reps of SCASLA, I’d like to thank you all for your participation and support over the past year.  I have had such a blast working with/for you.

Sincerely,

Jessyca Frederick
President, UCLA Extension Student Chapter of ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects).
